Grades 11 and 12
DIS students are supported to become active, independent and responsible participants in their education as they prepare for higher education and life after school. To assist them throughout their learning journey, we emphasise balance by focusing on wellbeing, co-curricular activities and real-world learning experiences. By graduation, our young adults are fully equipped to embrace whatever the future may bring.
The Victorian Certificate of Education
DIS offers the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) as its senior secondary graduating certificate. The VCE is a world-class academic qualification, comparable to qualifications such as the British A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, and American Advanced Placement (AP) Courses. The VCE is recognised globally, providing a pathway to study at universities in Australia and the world.
The VCE is governed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), which is responsible for determining the curriculum, assessment and reports.
Students typically complete their VCE studies over two years. However, students with overseas educational qualifications deemed equivalent to Year 11 or Year 12 by the VCAA may enter the VCE during their final two years of school (see VCE - Equivalent Qualifications).
The VCE at DIS
DIS offers students the opportunity to choose from a wide range of subjects and specialise in areas that enable them to pursue their passion and interests, providing a more personalised educational experience.
Our small class sizes enable us to create learning environments that encourage meaningful relationships, promote collaborative opportunities and provide individualised support to foster student confidence and academic success.
The VCE curriculum is delivered by a team of highly qualified and experienced educators, most of whom are Australian or have taught in Australian schools.
Our association with Haileybury College
In 2012, DIS became accredited by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) in Australia to offer the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) in partnership with Haileybury College in Melbourne, Victoria.
Haileybury College is one of Australia’s largest and most esteemed schools. In 2018, it was named Australian School of the Year at the Australian Education Awards. Haileybury allocates time for several of its teachers to collaborate with our staff in delivering courses at DIS. Together, we design common assessment tasks, create resources and standardise our marking to ensure that our students receive an educational experience on par with their peers at Haileybury. Every two years, Haileybury students fundraise to provide a two-year scholarship for a Timorese student to study at DIS.
The VCE curriculum
The VCE includes smaller, more frequent assessments throughout the year. This provides students with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, which can reduce the pressure of one final exam.
The VCE is also designed to assess students' abilities in a broad range of ways that includes school-based assessments and tasks and exams. This provides a more rounded evaluation of a student's performance.
